Role play allows children to explore and create new and exciting worlds. The possibilities of children’s role play can be endless and can also be a very powerful tool for learning new vocabulary, as children take on roles/characters, act out various scenarios and stories, and solve problems using language and movement.

Children are amazing at picking up words and phrases we use or that they have heard through teachers, friends, and other adults. Role play helps them to understand the power of language and how to use these words in various scenarios as well as encouraging them to listen to what is being said.

Training Objectives Play allows children to be in control at their own level and engaged in the interactions that they create, and when adults follow this lead, children are likely to learn more language rather than during an adult-led experience.

• How do we encourage meaningful role-play for and with the children
• What resource collections can we utilise that encourage children to engage effectively
• How do we as adults take an active and productive part in role play to make it purposeful
• How can we use these role-play situations as a tool to create conversations with the children, serve and return interactions

This course will enable us to explore what we see happening in role play areas, both indoors and outdoors, and identify where we see and hear language being used by children, their peers, and adults, and how this in turn provides a whole host of opportunities for children to hear, rehearse, and learn language and communication skills and new vocabulary, identified in the educational programmes of the new EYFS curriculum, development matters 2021.
